Dental Implants

Dental implants are inserted by Mr W P Smith (Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon). Mr Smith uses the Astra Tech Implant system which has an excellent and reliable record of success.

Patients who are interested in consultation and discussion are invited for an out patient consultation at either the Three Shires Hospital or Woodland Hospital. Dental implant treatment is rarely covered under private medical insurance.

Dental implants are placed into the jaw bones to replace missing teeth. Surgery can be carried out under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic.

Dental implants involve the insertion of the fixtures into the jaw bone which are used to support dentures, crowns or fixed bridges. Following insertion, the implant is left for 3 to 4 months whilst osseo-integration takes place. Osseo-integration is the process whereby the jawbone grows around and integrates with the implant.

Following this period of integration, a specialist in restorative dentistry – Mr Lewis, constructs a fixed crown, fixed bridge or a specialist denture.
